The Queen Victoria Connection

There is a family legend that one of our ancestors was a distant cousin of Queen Victoria. My sister was named Victoria because of this legend!

The story comes from my grandmother Esther (Agnew) Barnard, and especially from her sister, my Great-Aunt Wilna McCaskey. Esther and Wilna’s mother Audrey (Agnew) Aber had a father or grandfather who was a distant cousin of Queen Victoria. When he was traveling by ship from England to the United States, Queen Victoria met him on the dock and gave him a small spoon from her collection in remembrance of their relationship. That spoon remains in the family to this day.

We know who the person must have been – both of Audrey’s parents, three out of four grandparents, and parents of those three grandparents were all born in Pennsylvania. They could not have emigrated from England during Queen Victoria’s time! Audrey’s grandfather William G. Allen emigrated from England to Pennsylvania when age 21, during Queen Victoria’s reign, so he exactly fits the story.

William arrived in the United States 6 February 1848 at the Port of New York. On Saturday 22 December 1849, he declared his intention of becoming a citizen at the Clarion County Courthouse. He became a citizen 9 February 1855. He was a coal miner, and died in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, 9 Jan 1892.

We’d love to confirm the story… perhaps his obituary might say something of the legend. Or give more information about his parents, and their obituaries might give us more information.

I have been doing some research, and Albert Grove Barnard was married to one of my relatives, Freelove Bingham. Both are buried in Mound Hill Cemetery in Medina County Ohio. Unfortunately, whoever listed them posted Albert’s last name as Bingham (that was Freelove’s maiden name), and their daughter Jennie E. is also buried there but listed as Bingham also.. I am thinking they must be buried in the Bingham plot. You can find a limited amount of info on them by searching findagrave.com. I have lots of Bingham info. Thanks, Brenda

    Dear Barnards,
I saw your website while looking for online information on the Barnards of Deerfield, Mass. Then I saw your posting about your family connection to Queen Victoria. It’s actually quite simple to prove your connection to her. If you have an ancestry.com account, you click on the “home person” and under further options, you can select “relate to famous people.” If you have any trouble, just email me. By the way, my connection to Victoria is that she loved to vacation at the Osborne House on the Isle of Wight. Osborne is named after my Osborne ancestry from England. Cheers, Damien

I have some wills from UK Archives relating to Ann Strong, nee Tritton, Mother of Thomas Linwood Strong and Clement Samuel Strong, his Father, if you would like them. We did a lot of research on Thomas thinking he was related. I don’t think he is.
