Cemetery: Memory Lane Cem., Silver City, NM. The cemetery in Silver City was originally located between 10th and 12th streets and Santa Rita and West streets. In 1873 it was noted that the cemetery was in the path of the water lines to the town and it was suggested that it be moved. It wasnt until 1882 that they started removing the residents of the original cemetery to its present location. It was discovered that people had been burying there loved ones at the new location for some time before it was designated as the city cemetery. The crude markers had long since turned to dust making it impossible to know who is buried in many of the locations.

"History of the Cloudt Family including a complete translation of Genealogical - Historical Information of The Family of the Baron Von Pelden named Cloudt"
137 page, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, hard cover Price $25.00 Colored family crest, frontispiece
This is a very limited edition that is not likely to be reprinted. The book is large format and has a library quality hard case binding with a hand imprinted family crest on the front cover. A gem that is not likely to be encountered again.
This is not your usual genealogy book where John Doe married Mary and had 27 children named Peter, Paul and Mary, etc. Shirley Cloudt Barral and Raymond Charles Barrall have done extensive research over many years in both Europe and the United States. The result is an extraordinary book that includes a family history written in 1823 by Jost Friedrich Reinhard von Pelden named Cloudt going back eleven generations, plus two more added in 1825. Wilhelm and Annaliese Welfonder have made a translation from German to English that is very readable.
This book includes the family coat of arms in two colors and a reproduction of the portrait of Baron Jost Friedrich von pelden named Cloudt.
Of course, the book is extremely interesting to anyone who is a Cloudt family member or who is involved with a Cloudt family member. The book will also be of great importance to anyone interested in the social thought and life of a noble family in historical Europe. The book is very well indexed (over a thousand entries) and will be a delight to researchers and genealogists. The story is so intersting that a general reader will thoroughly enjoy reading it. A few excerpts follow:
Wealth of Family, p.13 "In former times and since 1300, this family was esteemed and rich."
The Purpose of Writing, p.97 "However, if one would have been willing to pass over and to cloak the sad events that happened during that period, the reason of this record would have entirely fallen flat. Not only is the purpose to give to the descendants a true historical statement of all that had happened in this family since its beginning, from generation to generation, but to render to them an instructive one, in order that they may learn therefrom which cliffs they have to avoid, what means they have to use, what caution to take in order to raise the family again, if possible, and to right the mistakes made."
Knightly Birth, p.5 "As both the oldest and the more recent documents irrefutably exhibit, the old nobility of this family has been acknowledged, not only by other families of equal birth but, also, by kings and sovereigns in their rescripts."
On Justice, p.96 "There is, however, an evenhanded justice in the moral world. The ancients already divined such a secret power and called it Nemesis. Sooner or later she holds her situation, sits in judgment upon us, and distributes the reward according to the deserts of our actions."
A Wish From the Past, p.13 "I wish that every member of the von Cloudt family, now and for the future, would respect these remarks written down here and particularized as a warning in their interests, to convice themselves of their truth, and to proceed accordingly."
Authenticity of Lineage, p.62 "In 1720 he [Jost Wyrich von Pelden called Cloudt] presented his genealogical tree of 16 ancestors at Bon."
The Baron's Concluding Advice, p.98 "Fortunate is he who uses an understanding of the past to provide him with leitmotive, he himself not to become a warning to those in the future. That way the bird avoids the place where birds have been ensnared. Take that for a model, lest you may be put up as an example to others."
On Rearing Children, p.97 "Moreover, it much facilitates a good education when parents know how to acquire the love and absolute confidence of their children. For that reason, and not from fear, children must be obedient to the orders of their parents."

Winnie and Frank Cloudt were good friends of my grandparents and I have many fond memories of them and our visits to their ranch. My mother named her first daughter Wilma after their daughter who was a best friend, but died in her 20s.

Book: Long Mott book unknown title. Pages 136-137
Long Mott
We are in receipt of the following account from the Upper Mott: August Roemer, house down, furniture destroyed. John Roemer, house badly injured. Geo. Cloudet(they put an "e" in cloudt), house demolished. Charles Sonnemann, house badly shattered. Mrs. Henry Wilner, house wrecked. Henry Burman (should be Bierman but was that in the book), house badly injured.
The Lower Mott (Seadrift) is reported to have suffered much less than the upper mott, alough nearly every house was more or less injured.

Background from another source:
INDIANOLA HURRICANES. The first of the two great Indianola hurricanes that resulted in the demise of the town began on September 15, 1875. The hurricane blew in from the sea, carrying the water from Matagorda Bay deep into Indianola's streets. Two days later, when the storm had subsided, only eight buildings were left undamaged, and fatalities were estimated at between 150 and 300 persons. After being rebuilt on a lesser scale, Indianola was completely destroyed by a second hurricane that blew in on August 19, 1886, this time accompanied by fire. This storm was considered worse than the first one, but because there was less town, it caused less damage.
Kerrie,....
This must be the original Cloudt ranch house! The cloudt ranch property was much closer to Long Mott than the Bindewald ranch. Bindewald ranch house is just out of Seadrift several miles, not far from the banks of the upper San Antonio bay.

Cemetery: De Cloudt Cem., Victoria, Calhoun Co., TX. Buried on the property of what used to be the Cloudt Ranch, and was next door to the Bindewall Ranch. Seems there are two graves there next to each other but I can not remember who the other one was, it may not even be marked. Uncle Mott's grave has a big bush by it and it is on slanting ground, sort of going on a downhill area.

Photo of Fred Cloudt, Frank Cloudt and M. Cloudt. Printed in local newspaper of Johnson City. Also have an enlarged photo of a newspaper clipping with photo of the Old Settlers of The West Brook Post Office. Newspaper: The Record, Johnson City (Blanco Co.) Texas, Volume 61
In the picture are seated, left to right: Fred Cloudt, Charles Klett, Frank Cloudt and Ed Felps. Standing, left to right: Emil Klett, M. Cloudt, A.J. Ferrell, Ed Golden. There is also another interesting part to this picure. Writen in pen and ink on the margin of the photo is "Old Settlers of West Brook Post Office". We wanted to learn about this post office and it ws Miss Mamie Klett, who came up with part of the information. Miss Klett is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Klett. Miss Klett told us that the West Brook Post Office was located on the Pedernales River somewhere between Johnson City and Hye. She did not know the exact spot, but remembered hearing her mother tell about how they (when she was a small child) would have to go to the West Brook Post Office for their mail. From Mrs. Levi Deike we found that this post office was first established in 1869. Shortly after being estabished it was discontinued and then reestablished in 1872. Ed Holden was named postmaster. In 1889 it was discontinued and all mail went to the Hye post office which had been established in 1878. Mr. Hye Brown was named postmaster and the new post office was named after him. Mr. Brwon continued as post master until his resignation. Mr. Brown was a brother of Mrs. Klett and brother-in-law of Charles Klett.

See the History of the Cloudt Family for actual source reference. Text: The family of the Barons von Cloudt, however, still has important claims and active lawsuits, some of which concern themselves alone, and some of which they have interests in together with other families. The most important of these claims, and a claim concerning the Cloudt family alone, would surely be that to recover indemnificaiton for the considerable sums the Governor of Nuijhs, Friedrich Hermann, had spent for the maintenance of this fortress, for throwing up new earthworks, for providing big guns, for supplying the garriosn with provisions, and for paying the soldiers. All these were paid from his own means although in the interests of the Elector Gebhard of Cologne, of the Truchsess Family, as well as in the interests of his allies. But the Truchsess enterprise completely failed; and, the ancestors, being heirs of Friedrich Hermann, because of the insolvency of their claims to his allies, the Englishmen and to the States General of the United Netherlands, or couldn't succeed in enforcing the claims. Now, after an elapse of nearly 240 years, these claims may be considered as expired and lost forever. More details about this will be given in the history of said Friedrich Herman. Another claim which Friedrich Hermann wa also entitled to, andtherefore concerning the von Cloudt family alone, was tht against the Prince of Orange modo against Prussia, as owners fo the former County of Moers, originating from a mortgage deed of six thousand Dutch Reichsthalers on the memorial estate of Creyfeld and Crackau made out by Count Adolph zu Neuenar and Moers for advances of money and expenses, especially amde in conneciton with the stron castle of Crackau. Regarding this case, legal steps were taken against the Prince of Orange in his capacity as a Count of Moers, and were followed up till 1642. However, the final verdict has been never pronounced. The case had been postponed as the von Cloudt family, from father to son, had held the first position of Drosts and Governors of the County of Moers; and, as they had a great liking for the Orange family. After this country had come to Prussia, this family tried to maintain their claims; and, at every new accession to the throne, they repeated their respective petitions. Each time, however, these remained without success and were rejected. Only under the present government was an ear given to the von Cloudt family, in tht the task was imposed on the adminstration at Aachen to at least investigate these claims of the family. With said administration, negotiations regarding this case are actually being carried on, which are conducted and followed up by the Notary Public Weinhagen, who is still keeping in custody the orginal of the mortgage deed in question. Time will show whether at last this family will recover [claims], or the efforts to get such an indemnificationo will once more remain without success. However, it must soon be decided.
The third case in which only the Cloudts have an interest is that against Gueldria [or Gelderland] at Arcen. It concerns the imporant Paland Estate at Kirchharden in the region of Julich. The respective documents are at Wezlar in the registrar's office of the Imperial Court of Chancery. The case is cimplete. At present the highest legal authority in Prussia is competent to pass sentence.
Another legal contest, Eyll modo their heirs against Count Maxelrein and Waldeck, "modo von Bonguard zu Paffendorf." In this case the von Cloudt family has a one-fourth interest, as do the "von Preudt modo Freyherr von Nyvenheim zu Caldenhausen" have one-fourth, and the heirs von Schonebeck, however, have one-half, as the descendants of and successors to their great-grandmothers, Catarina and Christine von Eyll zu Lauersofrt. This case concerns the succession of Franz von Schonradt and especially the manorial estate and landed properties zum Pesch near Castrop in the Julich region. Though in the archive there are circumstantial records, they are, however, incomplete; and, they certainly must have grown to a great many volumes. For, even before 1544, this case became a legal contest and has been pushed on partly at the law court of Holtzweiler and at the main court of Duren, partly at the High Court of Justice at Dusseldorf, and also very eagerly at the Justice at Dusseldorf, and also very eagerly at the Imperial Court of Chancery. In the course of this legal contest, several families presented themselves as being the nearest heirs, handed over their deductions and genealogies for the reocrds, some of which, however, are confused and indistinct. They do not completely prove what they wanted to.
The von Bongard family is related to the testator, Franz von Schonradt, in the fifth degree, and the von Eyll family in the sixth degree. Nothing is stated here, however, of the von Schonradt estates, but only of the estates of Alheit Hoen zum Pesch, mother of Franz von Schonradt. For that reason, the von Eyll family is the nearest one. The estates must revert to the line they have come from, which also is in accordance with the rules valid in the countries of Julich and of Berg. Therefore, the von Eyll family will take precedence over von Bongard, unless other persons can prove that they are nearer in blood relationship. However, according to the documents, this couldn't have been the case.
Furthermore, in Haehs versus Ossenbruch;Degenhard v. Haehs, Doctor of Laws, Bailiff at Lynn and Urdingen, and proprietor of Sollbruggen, and his wife, Veronica von Tingnagel, had no surviving children. With her own knowledge and consent, on September 30, 1575, he made his will, appointing therein his sister, Lucia, wife of Johan von Merode zu Schlossberg, as heiress of one-half and the two sons of his brother, Wilhelm von Haess zu Conratzheim, lawfully begotten with Anna von Bernsau: namely, Degenhard and Adolph, to the other half of his whole property, as universal heirs. First of all, however, he bequeathed the house of Sollbruggen to Adolph. To the two daughters of his brother, Wilhelm: to Barbara, from whom descends the Quadt family von Rheindorf, he bequeathed, however, 1,000 Goldgulden*, and to Margareta, married to Erasmus Schall von Bell, simply 500 Goldflorins; thereby, entirely excluding them from succession. Becasue of the Cologne War tumults, these effects [personal belongings] had been deposited with President Governess Johanna von Ossenbruch at Dusseldorf in six various chests by testator Degenhard zu Sollbruggen. In this deposit there were precious objects valued at 6,469 Rthl.,* cash for 4,168 Rthl., and documentaryh proofs for 40 thousand gold florins. Tese effects are the matter in dispute. In 1585 the resident governess had repeatedly withdrawn money therefrom and had handed over the documentary proofs and effects, in April 1585, to the codefendants, Margareta von Haess and Johanna Quadt, without previous knowledge and consent of the heirs. In this legal contest, many families are involved pro and con. As plaintiffs, among others, are the following families: Loe zu Wissen, Hompesch zu Rurich and zu Bolhem, Cloudt, Hatzfeldt, and merode. Because of a decision of the Imperial court of Chancery, dated March 4, 1698, the defendants had been condemned to hand over the deposit to the bailiffs. Some other points, however, had been referred to afurther hearing. In the archive there are no documents regarding this case other thansome arrangements and minutes, since the von Hompesch family is said to have pushed on the case. Therefore, one doesn't know what has been pleaded after 1698.
In addition to the above cases, the von Cloudt family is involved in the lawsuit Luxembourg modo Kinsky against the heirs de la Falloise, because of their mother and grandmother. There are no records in the archive about this, since it is a Kinsky matter. Carl von Kinsky had revived it in 1790. That induced the Chaberlain Friedr. Reinhard von Cloudt to make inquiries of the Procurator Flach of the Superior Court of Justice about the circumstances. From his two reports from April 15, 1791, and May 24, 1792, can be taken the following. The not unimportant claim originates in the marriage contract between Baluin von Luxembourg and Margaret de la Faloise. The case became pending in 1581 at the "Conseil Ordinaire" at Luttich. In 171 the de la Faloise family appealed o tthe Imperial Court of Chancey. Several decisions favorable to the von Kinsky famiy have been passed therein. Part of the claim has been decided and is expected to be executed. Since, however, the heirs of the de la Fallois famioly have not been ascertained so far, one does not know against whom to enact the execution. In 1790 three Counts von Hamricourt zu Ramjoul and Seignieur de Libert were cited. Also the heirs de Waes, Bartholt de Wansoul, and Faloise de Rubose are passively interested therein. It is inexplicalbel that the von Kinsky famil did not have the decision executed. In like manner, it is inexplicable that they did not continue pushing on the case regarding th epoints not yet decided. If the heirs and owners of the Faloise estates could be ascertained, the case would have been decided soon. Moreover, this case had to be introduced to the Administration of Justice of the Kingdom of the Netherlands, since the Imperial court of Chancery had been abolished.
Under the actual conditions of the family, it would be desirable, or even indispensable, for all claims to be asserted, since, in each case, nothing can be lost; however, very much can be won. It can't be concealed that reassuming and terminating these law suits will be connected with a lot of difficulties and immense expenses.
[A discussion continues on pg 18-19 regarding how the expenses may be paid for and who will initiate such claims. The matter is left unresolved.]
