Edward (Cowherd) COWARD

On April 2, 1764, Edward Coward was given authority for a patent of
200 acres of land, "A little below the Great Meadow on Polecat Branch
in Dobbs County, North Carolina." Edward Coward, Junior, was a
chainbearer. Land Grand Office, Secretary of State, North Carolina,
Raleigh, North Carolina.

On April 22, 1763, James Coward was issued patent for 130 acres of
land in Craven County, North Carolina, on the west side of Core Creek
between the widow Beasley's and Samuel Pope's beginning at a Cypress
on the creek side and runs N 34, 98 poles to a gum on the creek side
and runs then S 64, W 160 poles to Samuel Pope's corner tree then S
13, W 120 poles along his line to the Creek Swamp then with a direct
line to the first station. William McCoy and William McCoy, Junior,
were chainbearers. In a patent to Edward Coward dated November 1,
1792, there is reference to "James Coward and William McCoy's line."

On September 26, 1766, Edward Coward, Junior, was issued patent for
200 acres of land on the north side of Contentney Creek below the
place of James Coward in Craven County, North Carolina. James and
Nathaniel Coward were chainbearers. Land Grant Office, Secretary of
State, Raleigh, North Carolina. Probably was on Dobbs and Craven
County line.

On September 26, 1766, James Coward was issued patent for 185 acres of
land in Dobbs County, North Carolina, on the north side on Contentney
Creek, opposite William Coward... to a place in Edward Coward's line.
Ira Roberts and Nathaniel Coward were chainbearers. Book 8, page 294.

that the above two grants are on same day and most of the same people.

In 1754 a Deed from James Roberts to Edward Coward. Property in
Johnston County, North Carolina. Johnston County changed to Dobbs
County in 1758. It is most likely that this is Edward Coward's
father-in-law. In a paper by Jackson Cowart in 1883 he states Ezekiel
Coward's mother was a Roberts. Also note that Ira Roberts was a
chainbearer for James Coward in 1766.

On July 21, 1774, Edward Coward was issued patent for 150 acres of
land in Dobbs County, North Carolina, on the north side of Great
Contentney Creek between James and Edward Coward's line. Chainbearers
were Needham and James Coward. Book 22, page 345, Land Grant Office,
Raleigh, North Carolina.

On January 2, 1780, Needham Coward was issued patent for 50 acres of
land in Dobbs County, North Carolina, on the north side of Great
Conentney Creek, joining Williams Miller's, Edward Coward's, and James
Coward. Chainbearers were Edward Coward and James Coward. Book 45,
page 11, Land Grant Office, Raleigh, North Caorlina. He was married to Roberts about 1740 in Johnson County, NC.

Edward Coward and Dorcas Roberts Coward executed Deeds Of Distribution
to three of their sons Edward Coward,Jr.,Ezekiel Coward and Needham Coward.
The one to Needham Coward is listed in Book 11,Page 48,and dated January
1777 to April 1779.As far as is known only the copy to Edward Coward survived
and is the property of Ann Dixon Vernelson.(Ref. Book:Louie Franklin Coward

2596. Edward (Cowherd) COWARD ¹¹⁶ ¹¹⁷ ¹¹⁸ (John⁷, William Coward⁶, William Coward⁵, William Coward⁴, Thomas³, John², Robert¹) was born in 1723 in Bertie, NC ^{¹¹⁶ ¹¹⁸} and died in 1790 in Dobbs, NC ^{¹¹⁶ ¹¹⁸} at age 67.
