General Notes (Husband)

Walter spent his young boyhood days helping his father manage several ranches in the Kickapoo area. When older, Walter's ranching operation consisted mostly of raising big mutton goats, often running 10,000-12, 000 head. This was the days before good pickups and Walter and his crews would ride horseback to work stock on Indian Creek, Kickapoo, Double Wells, now a part of the Silver Lake country and then on to Montell Creek.

In 1918 Walter was prepared to join the Army, but the war ended before he was to leave. He is shown on the Draft Registration records for Edwards Co., TX

February 19, 1920 Walter and Flora bought their Indian Creek Ranch from Jesse Thurman and this ranch was owned by the couple until Flora sold it three days prior to her death in July 1974. Walter paid Jesse $7.00 an acre for the 5,670 acres. In 1974 the ranch sold for more than $1,000,000.

In the early 1940's Walter contracted Bergers Disease which caused the amputation of both legs above the knees, confining him to a wheelchair.

Throughout their lifetime they owned several ranches of several thousand acres each. 6
