Harry Oliver WINKENHOWER Sr

Oliver worked in the family business that had been established in 1902, the San Antonio Tent and Awning Company. In 1941 Oliver and his brother became owners. During World War II, Oliver entered the service in April 1943, and was discharged in January 1946, after serving I nineteen months in the Asiatic Pacific Theater of war. While her husband was overseas, Mary Emma returned to Rocksprings at the request of her parents, as all of their sons and sons-in-law were in the war overseas. She helped the local doctor. Dr. Robinson, and made house calls for him to help ease his work load. After the war she and her husband returned to San Antonio.

She was named after Mary Emma Owens, wife of Anthony Wayne Owens, early residence and business developer in Rocksprings. Mr. and Mrs. Owens reared Mary Emma's mother when she was left an orphan at the age of four.

Mary Emma graduated from Rocksprings High School in May 1937, and in June entered nursing training in San Antonio, Texas, at the Medical and Surgical Memorial Hospital, now known as the Baptist Memorial Hospital. After graduating from the Medical and Surgical Memorial Hospital in May, 1940, as a registered nurse, she did private duty nursing until she married Harry Oliver Winkenhower. 116 133 234
