Hester Holcombe was born in February 1684 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT; McCracken gives birth as Feb 1684, Seaver as 1682, McPherson as Feb 1684. She was the daughter of Nathaniel Holcombe and Mary Bliss. Hester Holcombe married Brewster Higley, son of Capt. John Higley and Hannah Drake, on 17 February 1708/9 at Simsbury, Hartford Co., CT. Hester Holcombe died in 1760. Hester Holcombe was also known as Esther Holcombe.
The 8 children are shown in the The Heritage of Granby p 173 under Holcombe, not under Higley. Alternately called Hannah Hester and Ester.
The total age lived by her eight children was 646 years, averaging 80 years and 9 months per person. Their numerous descendants settled in VT, Central NY and Meigs and Windham counties, OH.
The entry of the marriage upon the "Simsbury Records," book ii, gives the name as "Hester." In the latter part of her life she was knownas "Esther." (Higley, p 100)
She is buried beside her husband, Ens. Brewster Higley.
John Higley 3d married at the age of twenty-two, the fact of which is setforth in the Town Records of Simsbury, thus:
"Aprill 7, A. D. 1757. Brewster Higley the 3d, son of Brewster Higley the 2d, and Esther Owen, daughter of John Owen and Esther his wife, were Joined in marriage by John Humphrey Esqr. Their grandfather's name is Brewster Higley and Grandmother's name is Esther. Their father's name is Brewster Higley and mother's name is Esther, so that there are three generations from Grandfather and Grandmother down to Grandson and granddaughter, all of one name for male, and one name for female -- three generations now living. May the divine blessing rest on them and theirs to the latest posterity."
The father of the bride, Deacon John Owen, was at that time the townclerk, and made the record.
They settled at Simsbury, where they resided for twenty-two years, then removed to Castleton, Vt. 29
Given John's mother's maiden name (Higley p 43).
Bowman says that Brewster is one of five children of Capt John Higley, but Stiles lists 10 by his first wife Hannah Drake and 7 more by second wife Sarah Strong. Stiles notes that Brewster's Simsbury descendants are the most numerous of the whole line. They are chiefly settled in Vermont, in Meigs and Windham counties, Ohio, and in Central New York.
