Lucy (Ford) Johnson told that Mariah's mother, known to her as only Granny Purcell, immigrated from France and only spoke French. She was a practicing midwife, delivered Lucy in Alma, NM in 1900. Lucy also told that her grandmother had dark complexion, black hair and brown eyes. We now know that Granny Purcell was Cynthia Christie and Mariah's father known only by Purcell. Older than 70 years at death. A very large woman. See photo in York History Vol. 1. ^6,65
