James was baptized on 27 Nov 1753 being 2 yrs. 20 days old (Parish Register p 36). He served in the South Carolina Militia during the Revolution(Stub Entries & Indents Book L-N P 350 #635, Lib N, issued 18 Apr 1785 to Mr James Perkins for 5 lb. 7p.1/2s. sterling, 2000 tw beef, 80 tw pork and 4 bus corn for continental use in 1781 abd 1782 for 75 days duty in Militia in 1782.
James was in Cheraw Dist. SC in the 1790 Census with 2 males under 16, 1 male over 16 and 7 females. He moved from there to Liberty Co, GA and then on to MS.

James m. Margaret Chandler in SC and they moved to Liberty Co GA where James had a landgrant. Georgia passports show that on Thursday 6th oof December 1810, a passport was issued by the Gov. of GA for James Perkins, with his wife and two children to pass through Creek Nation into Mississippi Territory; also for Samuel Perkins with his wife and one negro. Samuel was the son of James and apparently, prior to 1810 all of James' children had married with the exception of two daughters, Nancy and Margaret. Nancy married after arrival in Mississippi and Margaret was unmarried at the death of James. ( per family history compiled by Dr C P Munday in 1935-36)

James settled in Marion Co. MS somewhat southeasterly from the present site of Columbia, along with his sons Rees and Samuel Perkins, his daughter Jane P. Smart and his sister Elizabeth Perkins Warren. Land records of Marion Co show that James owned land in Section ?, Township 2, range12 East. His brand "JP" was registered and recorded in March 1818, earmark and upper square in each ear, Book A, Page 29. His name appears on the Personal Tax Rolls in Marion Co from 1812 to 1826

James dated his will on November 12, 1826 (Orphans Court 1825-1831, Pg. 39-40) and the order to probate the will is dated Dec 25 1826. (Orphans Court
1823-1832 Pg. 147), Therefore it may be assumed that James died in November or December of 1826. Letters testamentary were issued March 1, 1827; appraisal made on March 26, 1827; and final account filed in September, 1830 (Orphans Court 1812-1827, Pgs. 15, 250. His will mentioned the following children: Rees, Samuel, Susanna Perkins Smart, Nancy Perkins, Elizabeth Perkins, Jane Perkins and Margaret Perkins.

A copy of his will and a list of inventory of the estate is in his file. 117
